Inspired by an Athenian red-figure cup, the Deeds of Theseus is portrayed.       

In the center of the cup is the image of Theseus, the dead Minotaur from the Labyrinth.  Around the center image are six of Theseus’ exploits on the road from Troezen to Athens, and his subsequent encounter with the Marathonian bull.  One of these exploits is the subject of the piece shown.  Here two naked men brawl, as they would at Olympai in the pankration (all-in wrestling competition).
